McCartney Multimedia Newsletter Spring 2010

Dear ,

Welcome to the Spring 2010 Edition of the McCartney Newsletter. Thanks to many of you, we're getting rave reviews on our new web site: McCartneyMultimedia.com exclusively built with McCartney Software Tools, our new site is easy to manage and maintain. What's more, the entire web site is driven by a very comprehensive database that allows automatic indexing of all pages for keywords and descriptions. Ask us how we can re-build your site to auto-optimize it for the Search Engines, spiders and robots. It may be less techy and more cost-effective than you think. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, grab a coffee (or even a tea) and cruise on in.

We are very happy to welcome United Cerebral Palsy/ WheelsforHumanity.org and our good friend David Richard back to the fold... please see below for information regarding their Hollywood fund raiser May 22nd.

We've also formed some great alliances in the music space with the folks below in the McCNetwork category. Each month we will be featuring a different industry.

So, here's what else has been happening this month:

Events: MUSEXPO 2010

The 6th annual MUSEXPO kicked off April 25th thru the 28th at the five-star London West Hollywood Hotel in West Hollywood. The confab brought together some of the most influential executives from around the world who are shaping the future of the global music business. This year’s event hosted 30 artists from 14 countries and welcomed delegates from three dozen countries on five continents. As always, MUSEXPO focused on the music first and business as a natural second. “MUSEXPO has always been about those who discover and develop music and those who are helping shape the future of the global music business in a positive and inspiring manner,” says A&R Worldwide and MUSEXPO Founder Sat Bisla.

MUSEXPO organizers kept the event intimate, inspiring and informative; after all, this year’s theme was “inspiration and innovation.” The event retained a similar ethos to the A&R Worldwide networking dinners started back in 2001, which have inspired many other conferences around the world and are the foundation of what MUSEXPO’s ideology is all about. MUSEXPO brings together executives from the music, media and technology sectors from both within the US and abroad in a personal, interactive and forward–thinking manner. And when the great Harvey Goldsmith participates, you know it was a stellar crowd.

In addition, the conference organized a top-shelf lineup of showcasing artists! With 100 plus A&R and publishing executives from around the world attending this year’s MUSEXPO, the expectations are high for many acts to walk away with tangible outcomes, thanks to the development foundation already in place. In addition, executives attending the event enjoyed a diversity of global attendees and companies to network and do business with, the strongest since MUSEXPO launched back in 2005.

Thank you Sat, Monte and the staff of AnR Worldwide for your continued belief in the truth that the music INDUSTRY has just got started. At iFanz.com we agree.

Fund Raiser Event May : Spirit of Movement Awards, UCP Wheels for Humanity

From their site:

Welcome to UCP Wheels for Humanity.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in North Hollywood, California. We refurbish donated wheelchairs and hand fit them to children and adults with disabilities in developing nations. We then partner with international health-care organizations to identify those in greatest need. With a team of volunteer health care professionals, each recipient is individually fitted to the wheelchair that best fits their needs.

Many factors contribute to the great number of the world's disabled, such as spinabifida, cerebral palsy, polio, landmines, war, natural disasters, spinal cord injuries and lack of adequate and timely medical care. In many developing countries, if you can't walk by yourself, you must crawl or be carried and are forced to live a life of confinement. UCP Wheels for Humanity is proud of our work to bring the freedom of mobility to thousands across the globe.

Since 1996, UCP Wheels for Humanity has helped more than 50,000 people with disabilities in more than 68 developing nations gain increased mobility and dignity. We will continue to do so with the help of our many generous supporters.

Fund Raiser Event April : Puttin' On The Ritz

For the second year in a row, our CEO Ruth McCartney performed Emcee duties at the Fund Raiser Gala "Puttin' on the Ritz" at the Wilmer Amina Carter High School for the Rialto Unified School District. An amazingly talented group of kids performed, and the headliner was local-boy-made-good Bennie Rodgers III, who is better known as Mariah Carey's drummer. Bennie had just returned from South Africa where he was working with Kenny Latimer, and was a true inspiration to the hometown kids who want to make it big.

Ruth was thrilled to be asked back to Emcee for a "threepeat" next year in 2011 by Dr. Harold Seebrun and Gala Committee Chair Syeda Jafri.

She promised the risk management department she wouldn't attempt to do the splits. Again.

Web Creation : T-Mobile's Got Talent

The genius multi-brained team at TBA Global is producing a very large meeting for their client T-Mobile in June. They came to us to create an employee and Frontline First partners ONLY video upload and streaming website.

The idea is that T-Mobile's employees and partners have a chance to show off their talents and win a trip to perform at the meeting on the west coast in front of 4,000 people.

The platform we built - to TBA Global and T-Mobile's specs - has a secure log in system which recognizes the only the VIPs invited to participate, a video upload and auto-conversion software, and a back-end admin, interface for managing accounts and videos, published content and featured content.

For future iterations, we can also add voting features, viral promotion features and more. If your firm or organization would like its' own "YouTube", well, now you know who to call!

Web Creation: New and Improved Media

We worked with our good friends at New and Improved Media to facilitate their chosen design and make all the moving parts and umpa lumpas in the digital engine room connect with one another.

NAIM are the most experienced chaps we know when it comes to securing airtime, ad space, billboards, and digital banners so when you decide to create a project with McCartney Multimedia, we can sure hook you up with the Pros.

BRITWEEK 2010

Nigel Lythgoe's baby, and iFanz client BritWeek, launched its' third year with great success in April. It began with a celebrity footie match at The Galaxy Home Depot Center, which featured Actor Michael Sheen and Chef Gordon Ramsay, amongst others. The official red carpet roll out cocktail party was held at the Residence of the Consul General, Dame Barbara Hay, a wonderful Scottish Lady, who graciously hosted several hundred people on 22nd April. We were greeted by a blonde bombshell playing the bagpipes at the entrance, and the event was attended by many celebrities, including Helen Mirren, her husband, Director Taylor Hackford, Juliette Mills and Maxwell Caulfield, Bruno Tonioli (the ebullient Judge of Dancing with the Stars), former Spice Girl Mel B, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Leeves, Perry Gilpin, Kelly Osbourne, Cat Deely, and famed Astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Dame Zandra Rhodes was her usual colourful self in one of her amazing creations. The activities of BritWeek (a 5013c non-profit organization) range from musical to comedy to cultural, to artistic, film and television, business innovation, and all of the subjects that lure Brits to create a successful business bridge between the UK and California. Ruth is a member of the Committee this year and special thanks go to Sharon Harroun-Peirce and Bob Peirce as well as the support team of Mindy Gail and the digital darling Joanne Lichtenstein.

Angie McCartney and Sir Richard Branson
discussing "Tea in Space"
Ruth McCartney and "Sir" Buzz Aldrin
discussing "Being in Space"

The Gala Dinner at The Beverly Hills Hotel on 22nd honoured Sir Richard Branson, and monies raised were for Save the Children and Branson's Virgin Unite Charity. It was another star studded evening, which included first Lady of California, Maria Shriver, Posh Spice, Morgan Freeman, a wonderful musical tribute by David Archuleta of American Idol, who sang and played John Lennon's Imagine. Angie re-kindled an old connection with Sir Richard from the days of The Manor, and needless to say, she pressed some of her organic teas on him! Shameless, I tell you!  There was a silent auction which included a myriad of offerings ranging from a week on Necker Island (Sir Richard's privately owned island and some time home), to a South African Safari, courtesy of Virgin, a round trip package to London, Manchester, or a thatched cottage in Devon, A Hawaiian Cruise on the Cunard's magnificent Queen Victoria, a Ranch getaway in San Juan Capistrano, and a one-of-a-kind Hat designed by Stephen Jones, OBE, valued at $3,000. This was presented by Anna Griffin, Editor in Chief and brains behind the fabulous green magazine www.cocoecomag.com. There was even an ad in the Gala Programme for Mrs. McCartney's Teas! Is there no getting away from her? BritWeek now extends to San Francisco and Orange County. These events might need to be re-named BritMonthandAHalf, as the activities extend from mid April to the end of May.

There is also a BritWeek Art Gallery event on lst May, which Ruth is helping organize with fellow Committee member and contributor, British Fine Artist Emma Ferreira, and (dare I say it?) Angie will be serving her organic teas. (Will this woman never stop?) Wines will be served from Nigel Lythgoe's Winery, Villa San Juliette, by his wine master, our old friend Adam LaZarre and Girl Friday Angie Newton. There are still a very few slots open to RSVP by clicking below.

Ruth's Recipe Of The Month

Fettuccine Alfredo

This is a dish which can easily take "add ons" such as mushrooms, peas or pancetta to turn it into an Emigliana - or just plain - either way's it's yummy. You could also add shrimp, salmon, chicken, flat leaf parsley or chives. Not so great for the bikini diet but yummy anyway!

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients

18 ounces fresh fettuccine
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
12 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cups grated Parmesan ( splash out and get the good kind and grate it yourself)
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
Salt and freshly ground white pepper

Directions

Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until tender but still firm "al dente", stirring occasionally, about 4 minutes. Drain.

Stir 2 cups of the cream and the lemon juice in a heavy large skillet to blend. Add the butter and cook over medium heat just until the butter melts, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Add the pasta and toss. Add the remaining 1/2 cup of cream, and Parmesan to the cream sauce in the skillet. Add the lemon zest, nutmeg, salt, and white pepper. Toss the pasta mixture over low heat until the sauce thickens slightly, about 1 minute.

Great served with an Arugula or Rocket Lettuce salad and a chilled, crisp Sauvignon Blanc or Verdicchio.

Tech Review Of The Month

Is the iPad really worth it?
by Martin Nethercutt

Okay, so lets talk iPad. I just received mine two weeks ago and I can't put it down. I even take it to - where I used to read magazines in the morning. Anyway, to make a long story short, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the iPad that I am asked constantly. You should read this carefully, before considering buying one.

Will the iPad replace my Powerbook / Notebook?

This is the toughest one of all to answer. I personally think not. With no multiple application support for the iPad, (Apple is working on it for iPhone version 4.0), it's limited to one program at a time and that alone won't replace the Powerbook, which still offers much more productivity.

What about Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint?

Well, that's another one I wished Bill Gates and Steve Jobs could wrap their heads around to make it easier for all of us.

iPad offers something similar called: Numbers and Pages ($10 per application!) I had no problems opening .doc and .xls files, modifying them and saving them back to the desktop. However, the iPad doesn't support the "Enable Hard Disk" feature that all the iPods have. Meaning I can't use the iPad as a storage device for external files. Bummer, because I have thousands of files that I would like to take with me on the iPad.

What about Battery Life?

I believe that battery life is most impressive feature in the iPad. I did 10 hours of continued usage without a charge, and the iPad told me it still had 30% battery remaining. Phenomenal for long trips overseas. It seems to me the whole device is one big battery. Keep in mind though that it will also take about 3-4 hours to recharge after such usage.

Summary:

If you are planning to use the iPad as a "carry with it you" to showcase your work (Music, Movies, Photos, etc.) then this one's for you. The crisp display is made of nearly scratch proof glass which is a Godsend because I'm a bit clumsy when it comes to handling equipment. All in all I think the price is right, (I highly recommend getting the most GB for your buck) and like I said, I can't put it down. So for an additional weapon in your computer arsenal, the iPad is ideal. Enjoy!
