The Trip to England
by Ruth, Martin and Angie

London

The tony Churchill Hyatt hotel is centrally located on Portman Square and the service was impeccable.
The best thing - besides the fabulous breakfast - was the shower, powerful and strong. Special thanks to Pat Roxworthy and Leila for organizing our stay.
After 22 hrs on the road and in the air, a nice cuppa tea and a hot shower were the most important things! We had a brisk afternoon walk down Oxford Street, Regent Street and found a cozy little scruffy pub with a roaring fire where a local pint of beer and small glass of wine wound up to be the equivalent of $28. London is very expensive and as Ruth compared prices of things such as eggs, bread and orange juice in grocery stores, calculated it to be about 3 times the price of stuff at home here in Southern California.

Liverpool
From Martin's daily diary:

Monday Jan 28th:
We made the drive from London to Liverpool in style - in a Maybach of all things - and arrived at our first hotel, the thrifty but fabulous Base2Stay on Seel Street. The books were finally delivered to a warehouse in Liverpool, and tomorrow somewhere between jetlag and the crack o'dawn, we'll take a taxi up there to help the ROK crew pack the gift bags containing Oval Vodka, ABK Bier from Munich and some lovely Paul Mitchell products. Better get some sleep. That's in about 4 hours.

Tuesday Jan 29th:
Breakfast delivered to Base2Stay. Picked up by Terry from FabFour Taxi Tours and off to the storage place in Old Swan. Gift bags - CLEAR! Then a quick dash to the Town Hall to meet the Lady Lord Mayor Sharon Sullivan and Deputy (soon to be Lord Mayor) Gary Millar for a private tour of the Town Hall and a photo on the famous balcony where the Beatles received their keys to the City.

Great kick off dinner at the Hope Street Hotel's London Carriage Works Restaurant. Ruth talked to Chef Paul Askew over the holidays and they created a "Fab Four Tasting Menu" inspired by various countries in Beatle songs and travels... an inspired gourmet experience. Rain. Sleet. 4 degrees Celsius. Took Angie and Ruth to the Cavern Club tonight, brought tears to my eyes. We were joined by our old friend from Munich, composer and producer Andreas Slavik... he sort of became Angie's "date".

Wednesday Jan 30th:

Hotel move and 2 radio interviews. Checked in to the gorgeous renovated Hope Street Hotel. Then off to sound check. Visited the box office at the Philharmonic with our guest list...tickets selling well. Special thanks to Rob Jessup who was a one-man promo team around town handing out flyers, talking to people, literally everyone in Liverpool knew about this show! (We think Rob might have had clones).

First interview was with Paul "Salty" Salt of Radio Merseyside sitting in for the scouse institution Billy Butler. Then a quick dash in the rain to Radio City and the legendary Pete Price. It must have been strange for Angie to be sitting in the Radio City Tower, where her voice is broadcast from every Tuesday night via link from Playa del Rey!

You can see Angie's Liverpool Home coming video here...

First show at the Liverpool Philharmonic went very well - hosted by the ever-fab Pete Price.
85% sold out on a blustery Wednesday night. The special theme music composed by Viennese Andreas Slavik lent a regal air to the pop music tone. Angie did her book signing and all the relatives were there to cheer her on. My goodness, how many cousins do these women have? I had no idea!
The show was a nice mixture of spoken word, interviews and anecdotes with Billy Hatton, Brian Epstein's assistant Freda Kelly, Author and Beatles expert Kevin Roach, Ange & Ruth and Beatles music from The Pangea from the Czech Republic, The Backwards from Slovakia, The UK's own Fab Beatles, and, all the way from Japan - The Tetrads.

Thursday Jan 31st:

Change of show format. More music, less interviews. We're expecting a younger crowd tonight so the idea is to mix it up for people who want to get up and dance in the aisles.
In case you missed the live event, you can still download the app and watch the entire show on your smart phone.

Friday Feb 1st:

We had the good fortune to run into Roger McGough at the Hope Street Hotel. He was presenting his one-man show at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Then, Pete Price organized a lovely trip 'round the Wirral to visit all the girls' old haunts. Ruth's childhood home, and still Paul's house to this day - Rembrandt, then off to the famous Nicholls in Parkgate for the world's best ice cream, which I have now developed a craving for - thanks Pete! Then we visited Ruth's old Grammar School - the place of her nightmares and due to new security in place, she actually got locked in! We visited Angie's birthplace at 19 Grosvenor Road in Hoylake, then it was off to West Kirby for a fab fish 'n chips lunch at the old post office which is now a gorgeous bistro called The WRO. From there we went to see the view across to Hilbre Island, then the German WW2 submarine at the Ferry Terminal in Birkenhead, then home to the lovely Hope Street Hotel. All, as you may have guessed, in the rain!

Saturday Feb 2nd:

Boo picked us up in the stupendously amazing Maybach and we drove back to London for our last night at what we were expecting to be "just another airport hotel". But let me tell you, the Hilton at Terminal 5 Heathrow is a truly outstanding property. Great service, and on the concierge floor we were treated to happy hour, gourmet snacks and in the morning, a full cooked English Breakfast. We whisked ourselves off to Heathrow and United delivered us in record time to Chicago and on to LA. It was only then that I realised Ruth had booked travel day on Superbowl Sunday aaaaargh! Thank heavens for that power outage, as at least I got to see the last 40 minutes of the game at home sweet home in Playa del Rey with all our kitties. Thanks to Antonis of Mativision.com, the world's unique 360 web and app. technology for staying with our furry boys and girls while we were on the road - there always has to be someone at the homestead with so many mouths to feed!

To sum it all up, we want to thank EVERYONE at ROK Books for their amazing hard work, support and sense of speed to get this all turned around in such a short time - especially their fearless leader Jonathan Kendrick.

For all the pictures of the trip, please check out Martin's Facebook page.

It was a very special treat staying at the Hope Street Hotel and enjoying their excellent service and staff. Where else in the world can you get an appetizer (giant chips) at 4 A.M ?

Chef Paul Askew is bringing food tourism to Liverpool and did an outstanding job on the four course Fab Four tasting menu for Angie's book launch.

The McCartney Dinner

George : Back in the USSR - A winter warming Borscht beetroot soup with rye toasts and dill creme fraiche.

Paul : Penny Lane - Some of the best fish 'n chips in the City! Miniature cod with Cain's Raisin Beer batter and chunky twice-cooked chips.

John : New York City - Home-cooked salt beef brisket with cabbage and parsley potatoes.

Ringo : Sie Leibt Dich - Traditional apple strudel with homemade honeycomb ice cream.

Copy from their site:

The London Carriage Works: modern international food, complemented by the use of local, organic and fresh seasonal produce.
The London Carriage Works opened in December 2003, quickly establishing itself as one of Liverpool's leading restaurants, enjoying rave reviews and critical acclaim. It was voted one of the top ten restaurants outside London in the 2005 Harden's Guide and also voted Restaurant of Overall Excellence at Liverpool Food and Drink Festival Awards 2010. It has been awarded AA 2 Rosettes 2010, 2011 and 2012 and won The Mersey Partnership Annual Taste Award for 2011.
The London Carriage Works acquired its name when during construction works the original sign above the restaurant doors became apparent in the stonework. The building, built in the 1860s in the style of a Venetian Palazzo, was once the home of a coach and carriage builders.

McAuliffe will be taking on the role of Oburi, a twenty-something street smart guy filled with innocence, though his past is anything but positive. His only wish is to save someone's life as a tradeoff, and he chooses Sawa to achieve that goal.

Carol Welsman was nominated for a Canadian Juno Award for her
CD “Journey.”

CAROL WELSMAN is an internationally acclaimed singer and pianist whose expressive vocal styling and dynamic stage presence have captivated audiences around the world. She has sold over 60,000 CDs in Canada alone, something few jazz artists in Canada have experienced.

See Carol in action once and you'll never forget her. Tall and blonde, she sits poised at the piano, head back, fingers stretched over the keys, her slender body arched in a seductive curve. Then the music flows, a combination of voice and piano that seems symbiotically linked. Like bossa nova icon Joao Gilberto and his guitar, Carol's honey and whiskey sound and her crisp, rhythmically articulate piano lines seem an integral part of each other.
At a time when female jazz singers have been arriving in waves, she is that rarity -- an authentic vocal/instrumental artist who brings an irresistible blend of musicality and lyrical insight to everything she touches.

Visit Carol's web site...

The Catalina Bar and Grill in West Hollywood seems to be a magnet for McCartney clients. During the month of February, Steve Tyrell, Oleta Adams and Shelly Goldstein have all appeared at this popular supper club, playing to packed houses.

From their web site:
"Our main priority is to please our diverse clientele by bringing the best jazz talent to Hollywood and continue to do so far for many years to come" said club owner Catalina Popescu. This supper club, with its Old World charm provides a warm and inviting environment for its guest, while enjoying a superb meal and great live jazz.

Catalina Bar & Grill has certainly lived up to its slogan "Nothing But The Best In Jazz" by presenting a veritable Who's Who of jazz legends such as Dizzie Gillespie, Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Ray Brown, Joe Williams, Max Roach, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson, Benny Carter,Tony Williams, Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jimmy Scott and many more.

More on Shelly Goldstein:

Shelly is a proud, self-proclaimed Beatles nerd who has hosted radio shows about the Fab Four in the U.S. and England and has been invited to lecture about their influence on music and culture throughout the U.S. She recently ghost-wrote a story about Paul McCartney & Wings’ 1971 University Tour of the U.K., about which Sir Paul said, “Yeah, this was great! You really got it right!” In 1995, she wrote and produced Intimate Portrait: Yoko Ono for Lifetime. In 2003, she wrote a tribute to George Harrison, hosted by his wife Olivia, for UNICEF.

Freda Kelly's Documentary Good Ol' Freda

Directed by Ryan White

THE FILM
Freda Kelly was just a shy Liverpudlian teenager when she was asked to work for a local band hoping to make it big. Though she had no concept of how far they would go, Freda had faith in The Beatles from the beginning, and The Beatles had faith in her.
History notes that The Beatles were together for 10 years, but Freda worked for them for 11. Many people came in and out of the band's circle as they grew to international stardom, but Freda remained a staple because of her unfaltering loyalty and dedication. As the Beatles' devoted secretary and friend, Freda was there as history unfolded; she was witness to the evolution – advances and setbacks, breakthroughs and challenges – of the greatest band in history.
In Good Ol' Freda, Freda tells her stories for the first time in 50 years. One of few documentaries with the support of the living Beatles and featuring original Beatles music, the film offers an insider perspective on the beloved band that changed the world of music.

Good Ol' Freda will have its world premiere at the prestigious SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX.

Angie's One Liners

You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life.

As you get older, your secrets are safe with your friends, because they can't remember them either.

I'd be unstoppable, if I could just get started.

The quickest way to get a child's attention is to sit down and look comfortable.

There's always something to be thankful for - right now I'm sitting here thinking how great it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

Featured Artist - The Knack

The Knack

Doug Fieger, Berton Averre, Prescott Niles and Bruce Gary were The Knack.  Their hit single “My Sharona” went Gold in thirteen days and was the #1 song of 1979.  Their debut album Get the Knack sold over six million copies worldwide. Their signature combination of pop melodies and irresistible rock beats broke the stranglehold of Disco and changed the course of popular music for the next decade.
iFanz Records is proud to have the distribution for newly released re-records of the 2 classic tracks: "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't (2001 Studio Bootleg)"
